Council discussion regarding compensation for City Councilmembers - how to determine the amount, how to determine the process, and possible amounts.

Joe Gorfida, City Attorney, explained to Council the limitations of using City funds and resources in the course of conducting a Charter Amendment election - can only provide facts and educate the public. He strongly advised against speaking for or against an item in a manner that might be perceived as using their position to try to influence a vote - in that their communication can speak for themselves as an individual, but not for the Council as a whole.

Motion to to include the removal of term limits in the Charter Amendment election - Mayor Sherman abstained. Moved by Councilmember Lockhart, seconded by Mayor Pro Tem Valentine.

Prior to his employment, Michael was a United States Air Force Military Policeman. During that time, he spent three years in the United Kingdom (England) and six years in the Republic of Panama.

In his spare time, Michael enjoys hunting and fishing.

Little Known Fact: Michael is a veteran of “Operation Just Cause” which was the military invasion of Panama to capture Panamanian General and Dictator Manuel Noriega.

Mayor Pro Tem Valentine announced the Corner Theatre production "Free Man of Color". Performances through February 26th - Fri/Sat at 7 p.m. $20; Sat/Sun matinee 2:30 p.m. $15. She stated she attended a performance and remarked that it was a great show.

Councilmember Lockhart announced the Concerned DeSoto Citizens’ Gospelfest on Sunday, February 19th from 4-6 p.m. at Faith Bible Church. For more information, you may call 972-230-4243. Tickets are $10. This event is a recipient of the DeSoto Arts Commission Arts Grant program.

Councilmember Edgin announced that the DeSoto Lions Club and the Rotary Club are looking for good volunteers. The Lions Club is hosting an open house on February 28th for anyone interested in learning more about this service organization.

Councilmember Zander encouraged anyone who has a business in DeSoto to join the Chamber of Commerce.

Councilmember Respess announced that the City of DeSoto has a new website address: www.desototexas.gov

Ms. Hallmark announced that information is available for anyone wishing to run for the available positions on City Council. Information can be requested on the City’s website and additional information can be obtained by calling the Office of the City Secretary at 972-230-9664.

Mayor Sherman announced that the City’s bond rating for this fiscal year improved to AA status. He commended the leadership, finance team, and City Manager. He also announced that there is a job fair for DeSoto residents for the Kohl’s E-Commerce and Distribution Center to be held from February 20-23 from 8-5 p.m. in the Bluebonnet Rooms. Interested persons must first register online.
