Councilmember Lebetter stated that if you have a member of the armed services returning home, the City of DeSoto would like to recognize and celebrate our soliders for their service. Mayor Pro Tem Valentine announced that this is the last weekend to see the Nacirema Society play at the Corner Theater. It is a romantic comedy about the tradition of cotillion featuring african american debutants.
Councilmember Sandy Respess announced that the DeSoto Library has partnered with the International Museum of Cultures in Duncanville to have a Black History Month program on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 11am in the DeSoto Library. Citizens are also invited to visit the DeSoto Library on February 26, 2013 from 10:30am - 12 noon, or Saturday, March 2, 2013, from 10am to 11:30am to learn about the Library's catalogue. Any additional information call 972-230-9661.
Councilmember Curtistene McCowan announced that the DeSoto, Texas, Historical Foundation invites all citizens to join in the African American History month celebration as Nance Farm on Friday, February 22 - Saturday, Febraury 23, 2013. If you would like to tour Nance Farm, the HTHF invites everyone on Friday, February 22, 2013, between 1-3pm or on Satruday, February 23, 2013, between 9am-3pm. Local African American artist, Alvin Williams, will have his work displayed on Friday and Saturday. Ms. McCowan also acknowledged Gayla Burton, President of Concerned DeSoto Citizens, and commended her recent successful programs; College Presidents Roundtable and CDC's Annual Gospel Fest. Lastly, the Bowling for Scholars event will be held at the DeSoto Bowling Alley on March 9, 2013. Additional information regarding the bowling event can be found at www.cdcdesoto.org.
Mayor Sherman acknowledged that Kisha Morris is the new City Secretary for the City of DeSoto. Additionally, Mayor Sherman discussed the Municipal Election scheduled for May 11, 2013. The candidate filing period ends on March 1, 2013 at 5pm. Three positions will be on the ballot: Place 1, Mayor; Place 3 and Place 5. Should you have any questions, please contact the City Secretary's Office at 972-230-9646. Lastly, Mayor Sherman announced that the City Council will convene into Executive Session to discuss the position of City Secretary.
